FAQ
What is Moonlighter FabLab?
Moonlighter is a community fabrication lab and S.T.E.A.M. learning center. It features a range of digital fabrication equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, sewing machines, circuits and more to help people of all ages build almost anything they can imagine. Moonlighter has won multiple awards for its unique approach to innovation and education. Their programs have reached over 10,500 students, over 25 schools, and has partnered with wonderful local institutions like the Frost Science Museum, The Bass Museum, The Wolfsonian Museum, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Miami Dade College, The Downtown Development Authority, and more! Moonlighter has been featured on NBC6, The Miami Herald, Metropolis Magazine, The New Tropic, The New Times, and Telemundo, and had been invited to the White House for a Nation of Makers Conference in 2016, organizing maker spaces from across the country to help their communities learn and build with the innovations that drive our future. Our programs are nationally recognized and you can learn more about our previous camps here.
What are the camp hours?
The camps run Monday through Friday (Excluding Holidays) 9am-3pm.
Drop-Off Time: 8:30am–9:00am
Pick-Up Time: 3:00pm–3:30pm
After Care (Optional) 3:30pm-5:30pm | $20/day or $100 per week
How does a maker camp work?
Each camp week is a unique topic, ie. architecture, circuitry, engineering, etc. and each day there is a new challenge to design and build. Students are introduced to the basic digital and physical skills needed to create: from quick cardboard and paper prototypes, to 3D printed and laser cut mock-ups of their design. This camp builds critical thinking and creative confidence by allowing each student to design and build their own custom creations – not just follow a set of instructions.
What ages are allowed to participate in the camp?
Children ages 7-12 are all welcome to join, certain exceptions can be made if contacted in advance.
Who will be leading the camp?
Tom Pupo and Daisy Nodal are the Co-Founders of Moonlighter FabLab. After earning their Masters of Architecture from Florida International University, they taught at the SOA Design Studio for two years before opening Moonlighter. They now create one-of-a-kind STEAM educational experiences via workshops, camps, field trips and events, where they introduce all ages to the latest technologies available. Other successful educational programs they produce include Miami Dade College Continuing Education Summer Program and Maker Camp at Doral Conservatory of the Arts and STEAM Sessions at the BASS Museum. As strong advocates of the Maker Movement, they believe that hands-on learning is not only the most effective but the most inspiring for the development of a child.
Additional camp facilitators serve as group leaders to help each camper make their ideas come to life, while ensuring safe use of all the tools and materials provided.
